What is hydrophobic impregnation and how does it work?
Hydrophobic impregnation is a system of invisible surface protection. It does not create a film on the surface. Greatly increases the durability of porous surfaces. Does not change the appearance of the surface. Compared to film-forming coating systems, hydrophobic impregnations penetrate pores and capillaries. They are embedded on the surface and do not fill the volume.
Hydrophobic impregnation changes the surface tension of the mineral substrate. With that, it causes water repellency of the surface. Prevents the water and dissolved aggressive substances to penetrate into the mineral substrate.
Why natural stone needs to be protected?
Natural stone is a porous substrate and as such is particularly exposed to the damage caused by moisture. Due to the high absorption of moisture, it easily binds in them. Problems with mold, moss and algae, capillary moisture, cracking of walls and stone, crumbling, ... All these are the consequences of moisture that penetrates the substrate. It works from inside it. Due of the chemical compounds that are dissolved in it and because of its sensitivity to the outside temperature. When the water in the substrate freezes, it expands due to its physical properties. When it expands, substrate cracks.
Absorbtion test for any material - Porousity test
Its easy to test how absorbent (porous) any material or surface is. Place several drops of water on the surface and observe how long it takes for the water to be absorbed:
- If it takes under one (1) minute, consider the stone very porous.
- If it takes up to 3-4 minutes, consider it porous.
- If it takes more than 3-4 minutes, consider it slightly porous.
Use this information when purchasing the cleaners and protection for material and surface. The porousity will determine which and how much of the agent you will need.
Nanocoatex hydrophobic and oleophobic protectors are designed for porous minerals (all very porous and porous) and polished minerals (slightly porous). When calculating volumes needed to cover entire area, check the information on the sticker (use the mimimum for high porous materials and maximum for less porpus).
How long does it take for Nanocoatex coating to dry?
Nanocoatex coatings are water based, so it is important that you protect coated areas from water for 24 hours. If the protected area will come in contact with water before that, it will het get dissolved and will not provide the effectiveness promissed.
Are all protectors safe to use?
If you purchased the product in the store, it is usually safe to use. But be very attentive to the warnings safety regulations of the manufacturers. Some products are safe to use only under strict following of the safety instructions. They may contain very dangerous bleaches, solvents, aggressive chemicals and toxins (biocides).
